What is Square Dancing?
Today's modern square dancing can trace its roots to the 17th century England. In the American colonies,
dancing was not much different from the motherland. But when the colonies fought for their independence, and were helped by
France, many begin to prefer the French style to the English. While remaining true to some of
its traditional roots, square dancing is enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. It is one of the few dance forms that is
done the same all over the world.
It takes four couples (8 people) to make up a square of dancers. A caller strings together a sequence of
calls or commands to make the dancers move as a team.
Why Should You Square Dance?
Dancing is specifically about cooperation and teamwork. Square Dancing allows people to congregate and enjoy
social recreation.
Square Dancing is not as complex as you might imagine. Like anything else you learn it one step at a time.
Modern Square Dancing
Dancing as changed a lot since the barn dances of long ago. Now Square Dancing is done in convention centers
